Chapter 9

1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet. I saw a star which had fallen down to the earth, and it was given the key to the abyss.

This fifth trumpet judgement is also the first of three "woes" pronounced by the angel of Revelation 8:13.2 The star opened the abyss, and smoke poured out of it, like the smoke from a large furnace; the sunlight and the air were darkened by the smoke from the abyss.

3 Locusts came down out of the smoke upon the earth, and they were given the same kind of power that scorpions have. 4 They were told not to harm the grass or the trees or any other plant; they could harm only the people who did not have the mark of God's seal on their foreheads. 5 The locusts were not allowed to kill these people, but only to torture them for five months. The pain caused by the torture is like the pain caused by a scorpion's sting. 6 During those five months they will seek death, but will not find it; they will want to die, but death will flee from them.

When this trumpet is sounded, an angel unlocks the "bottomless pit," and out of the pit belches smoke and "locusts" with the scorpion-like power to sting and torment unbelievers for five months. Their sting is never fatal -- infact, John says, "they will seek death, but will not find it; they will want to die, but death will flee from them." -- but the pain they cause will be unbearable. Victims of scorpion bites say the animal's venom seems to set one's veins and nervous system on fire, but the pain is gone after a few days; not so with these locusts. They are given power to torment "the people who did not have the mark of God's seal on their foreheads" for five long months. Yet unlike normal locusts, these beasts attack only unregenerate human beings, never foilage.

7 The locusts looked like horses ready for battle; on their heads they had what seemed to be crowns of gold, and their faces were like human faces. 8 Their hair was like women's hair, their teeth were like lions' teeth. 9 Their chests were covered with what looked like iron breastplates, and the sound made by their wings was like the noise of many horse-drawn chariots rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like those of a scorpion, and it is with their tails that they have the power to hurt people for five months. 11 They have a king ruling over them, who is the angel in charge of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon; in Greek the name is Apollyon.

The appearance of these locusts is both frightening and repulsive, and they do not act in an unorganized way; in fact, John says, "They have a king ruling over them, who is the angel in charge of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon; in Greek the name is Apollyon." Both names mean "Destroyer."This seems to be one of the plagues that God sends on the followers of the Antichrist to hinder them from proselytizing among the uncommitted of the world. It may also give Tribulation saints some time to prepare themselves for the horrors of the soon-to-come Great Tribulation.

12 The first horror is over; after this there are still two more horrors to come. 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet. I heard a voice coming from the four corners of the gold altar standing before God. 14 The voice said to the sixth angel, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River!" 15 The four angels were released; for this very hour of this very day of this very month and year they had been kept ready to kill a third of all the human race. 16 I was told the number of the mounted troops: it was two hundred million. 17 And in my vision I saw the horses and their riders: they had breastplates red as fire, blue as sapphire, and yellow as sulfur. The horses' heads were like lions' heads, and from their mouths came out fire, smoke, and sulfur. 18 A third of the human race was killed by those three plagues: the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur coming out of the horses' mouths.

At the blowing of the sixth trumpet, the second "woe" is unleashed: the release of "the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River". These angels apparently lead an army of 200 million "horsemen" who kill a third of mankind through the plagues of fire and smoke and brimstone. When you combine this third with the quater of humanity killed in the seal judgments, by this point in the Tribulation half of the world's population (after the Rapture) already has been destroyed.

19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and also in their tails. Their tails are like snakes with heads, and they use them to hurt people. The 200 million horsemen who come on the scene in this text will obviously be supernatural -- creatures that are so awesome to look on, ... ... that they will frighten some people to death. And their power "is in their mouths and also in their tails" -- and with them they kill one-third of the world's population of those who reject Christ and commit themselves to the Antichrist.20 The rest of the human race, all those who had not been killed by these plagues, did not turn away from what they themselves had made. They did not stop worshiping demons, nor the idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic, their sexual immorality, or their stealing.

Chapter 8

1 When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.
...
6 Then the seeven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

The seventh seal is different from all its predecessors in that it introduces the next series of divine judgements. While five of the seal judgements feature devastations wrought by man, all of the trumpet judgements vome direvtly from heaven. They are so severe that verse 1 says, 'When He opened he seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.' In the rest of Revelation heaven is seen to be a joyous and worshipful place, with choruses singing, trumpets blaring, celestial beings cying out - but suddenly there comes this ominous silence. As horrible as the seal judgements were, the trumpet judgements will be worse.

7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire fixed wih blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees burned up, and all the green grass burned up.

Ice and fire rain from the sky, burning up a third of all the earth's trees and all of its grass. This is an ecological disaster without parallel to this point in the history of mankind; its results are incalculable. To make matters worse, John also adds that 'blood' arrives with the hail and fire (see 2:30). And this is but the first trumpet!

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

When the second trumpet is blown, John sees 'something like a huge mountain, all ablaze" - likely an enormous meteorite crashing through the atmosphere - 'was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood.' As a result, a third of everything living in the sea dies, and a third of the ships on the sea are destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water - 11 the name of the star is Wormwood (Bitterness). A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

When the third angel blows his trumpet, another meteorite crashes to the earth 'blazing like a torch'. It does not fall on the sea but on a third of the earth's rivers and springs, turning them 'bitter' and poisonous. As a result of this plague, 'many men' die.

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them went dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

All life on this earth depends on the sun: If it were to explode, the earth would incinerate; if it were to go cold, the earth would freeze solid. Neither of those extremes is in view with the fourth trumpet judgement, but in some way God does reduce by a third the amount of radiant energy reaching the earth from the sun and all other celestial bodies.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by he other three angels!"

Chapter 6

This is when Jesus (the Lamb) opens the seven seals, the first seven judgements.

The Seals

1 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures (Rev 4:6-8) say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

The first seal introduces the initial member of the famous "four horsemen of the Apocalypse." The rider is said to have a bow but no arrows, indicting that although he is militarily strong, in the beginning he does his conquering by diplomacy. Since he wears a crown, we know that he is successful in his efforts. And who is this rider on a white horse? There can be no doubt that it is the Antichrist, who through deceit and clever manoeuvring will bring a false peace to the world. But that peace will not last.

3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

John writes of the second horseman, "The rider was give power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay one another. To him was given a large sword. I believe the seal represents a great conflagration we might call World War III. When Daniel's "three kings" oppose the Antichrist (Daniel 7:24), he will respond in deadly fashion, swiftly crushing his enemies and bringing death to earth on a massive scale never known before

5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart (Greek choinix, probably about a litre) of wheat for a day's wages (Greek denarius), and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine

Rampant inflation is suggested by John's words, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not harm the oil and the wine." Since a quart of wheat or three quarts of barley are basically subsistence diets, John is indicating that a man will have to work all day just to get enough food to eat, with nothing left over for his family or the elderly. On the other hand, the call to not "harm the oil and the wine" - symbols of wealth - indicates that the rich will do just fine

7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by the sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Why is the fourth horse pale? Because it’s colourless appearance symbolises death. John says the rider who sat on this horse "was Death, and Hades followed close behind. They were given power over a fourth of the earth, to kill by the sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth." One quarter of the earth's population - well over a billion people - will die as a result of World War III. That Hades (hell) follows Death shows that those slain are unbelievers, for upon death believers do not go to Hades but straight to the Saviour’s side.

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?" 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

When the fifth seal is opened, John sees "under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained." Shortly after the beginning of the Tribulation there will be a great "soul harvest" in which millions will come to faith in Christ, many as a result of the preaching of the 144 000 witnesses described in Revelation 7. Most of these Tribulation saints will be killed by the forces of Antichrist. These martyred souls will cry out for God to avenge their deaths, but they will be told to "rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brothers who were to killed as they were was completed." Imagine! Despite the desperate evil of the Antichrist, despite the horrors of the war and famine and pestilence and death, God is still so much in control of events that even the number of believing martyrs has been fixed by divine decree. Astonishing!

12 I watched as He opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

The first four seals described judgements largely inflicted by man; the sixth seal describes a judgement clearly supernatural in origin. John tells of an earthquake so massive that "every mountain and island was removed from its place." Probably he also has in mind enormous volcanic activity, for he says "the sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red." Particulate matter scattered in the atmosphere after a volcanic eruption has often turned the sky black and made the moon seem to turn red. John also foresaw meteorites crashing into the earth (v. 13).

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

The people of earth will recognize these phenomena as coming from the hand of God, for they are said to cry out to the mountains where they take cover, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"
